Terror and Disbelief

Thomas did not believe Jesus had survived the Cross.

When everything familiar falls apart, terror and disbelief are often the first things we feel — yet hope has a way of finding us even there.

That’s exactly what happened to Jesus’ friends on the first Easter morning.

They weren’t expecting a miracle. They weren’t feeling spiritual. They were simply trying to survive a moment that made no sense.

When Hope Finds Us Where We Are

The women left the tomb early that morning shaken and unsure what to think.

They’ve just been told that Jesus isn’t dead anymore — something no one had ever imagined.

It’s a lot to take in. They’re carrying a message they don’t yet understand.

One of them, Mary, stays behind in the garden.

She’s heartbroken, confused, and not ready to move on. She thinks she’s talking to the gardener, until He says her name — and suddenly she realises it’s Jesus, alive, standing right in front of her.

It’s gentle. Personal. Unexpected. Hope comes to her before she even knows how to look for it.

But while Mary is having this life‑changing moment, the rest of Jesus’ friends are somewhere very different.

Behind Closed Doors

His other friends are hiding in a locked room.

They’re scared — scared of what might happen next, scared of being recognised, scared because everything they believed in seems to have fallen apart.

They’ve heard Mary’s report, but they don’t know what to make of it. It sounds impossible. They’re still living in the shock of Friday, unsure what to believe.

And yet, even there, hope is already on its way.

When Peace Breaks Into Fear

Just as Jesus met Mary in the garden, He now comes to them in the place they feel safest — and most trapped.

He doesn’t wait for them to pull themselves together. He doesn’t wait for them to find courage. He simply appears among them and speaks calm into their panic.

He offers them peace, presence and reassurance.

He shows them that the story isn’t over. That death hasn’t won. That they haven’t been abandoned.

A Story That Moves Towards Us

This is the bridge between the empty tomb and the meaning of Easter today.

  • The women discovered something they can’t explain.

  • Mary met Jesus in a moment that turned her grief upside down.

  • The disciples met Him in a locked room they thought no one could enter.

And through each moment, the same truth became clearer: new life doesn’t wait for us to be ready. It comes to us where we are.

Whether we’re running with questions, standing in sadness, or hiding behind our own closed doors, the risen Jesus meets us in the middle of it;

— bringing peace where fear once lived, and hope where everything felt uncertain.

The hymn “Be Still for the Presence of the Lord” captures the moment the disciples experienced: fear giving way to awe as Jesus stepped into their locked room.

Its words remind us that the risen Christ still enters our anxious spaces today — not to frighten us, but to bring peace, healing, and grace.

Why not relax and listen to this beautiful hymn and let it calm your mind, as Jesus calmed the minds of his disciples.
