1 Peter: Encouragement During Trials

Peter’s first letter to the early church was written to encourage them to stand strong in the face of persecution.

The general themes he used were;

    • Hope in suffering: because eternal reward await us.
    • Christian identity:  they were God’s chosen people.
    • Christ as the example: His suffering lead to his victory, and ours.
    • Righteous living: to honour Christ even against opposition.

And his advice is just as valid for us today, in a world where people are turning from faith and often persecute Christians for their belief.

Because just as the early Christians struggled, but retained their faith, still today life can often be a struggle.

One of the ways I take comfort in time of struggle, is in sensing God’s presence in all his creation which surrounds us. The changing seasons, the growth and die back of the plant and wild life, and all the natural elements which nuture their well being.

But when I need deeper reassurance I often view the night skys and realise the smallness of my struggles, when considered against the vastness of the stars in the sky.

I recognise that we were all made from star dust, and to dust we eventually return. I have found this a very grounding meditation.

The Five Oceans

But then recently, I realised a much nearer source of wonder to meditate on – the vastness of the oceans covering more than 70% of the earth’s surface.

God’s underwater world is stunningly beautiful and astonishing, but so much of it has never been properly explored by humankind, who seem to prefer the exploration of stars and planets.

The Bible often references the oceans as a symbol of God’s power and wisdom. Because they are an amazing testament to his creation, filled with mystery, beauty, and divine order

The vastness of the oceans, teeming with life, reflects the richness of all God’s handiwork.

The waves and tides serve as reminders of His power and faithfulness, and as the ocean washes away footprints in the sand, we are reminded of God’s grace and renewal.

I have discovered that when I meditate on the wonders of the sea, I can step outside the pointless ruminations of inward thinking and allow myself to be free to savour the larger picture of this amazing part of creation.

1 Peter 5 : The Power of the Oceans as a Metaphor of God’s Omnipotence

The disciples certainly had many trials and tribulations to face in the early days, but this continues still today for modern-day Christians.

And, as such, Christians today can understand Peter’s letter of faith and encouragement amid life’s storms, by using the sea as a metaphor for God’s power, particularly in the last chapter.

  1. 1 Peter 5:6-7 Trusting God in Uncertain Times
    • Waves may be crashing all around us, but God’s presence is always strong, stable, and steady.
  2. 1 Peter 5:8 Standing Firm Against the Enemy
    • The enemy constantly seeks to shake our faith, like strong undercurrents in the sea, but God is stronger than the strongest undercurrent.
  3. 1 Peter 5:10 Eternal Glory in Christ
    • As Sailors need anchors; believers apply the hope they have in Christ’s promises as their anchor.

In conclusion:

Peter’s letter teaches faith amid the storms of life, and with Christ as our hope in times of growth, and our anchor in times of instability, we can eventually sail forward to eternal victory.

Because, no storm in our lives is ever too big for God to handle, with Him in our lives we can ride the waves of any worldly tsunami.
